Story starts last week, out buying veggies for a kabob. In front of the store is a little display of small herbs, the kind you're supposed to take home and grow in the windowsill to add some extra zest to your meals.
In that display I see a peppermint plant so wilted that not a single stalk is standing up, and a pineapple mint that's not much better.
I buy them, babytalking and encouraging the plants to last long enough so I can get them to my parent's, where the kabobs were to be cooked, so I could water and do plant first aid to help the overheated darlings. Once the plants were okay however I had a problem. One was rootbound. I had no pots or potting soil. So I left them in the trust of my mother who has a much greener thumb than I, and left with a promise to bring supplies to take care of the plants, then bring them home.
Today, I gather up Mom and Fraternal Sibling and we go to Lowes. By the time we were out of the garden center, I had three more plants to my name (one to be planted in my mom's yard as mine is xeroscaped), two bags of potting soil, a pot, and a bit of plant food. I forgot the watering can, and the small gardening tools. Mom uttered the phrase, "Killi, if you're already babytalking the plant, take it home already!"
So now I have two mints, freshly replanted, on my kitchen table, and a large lavender plant I think they intended for me to plant in the ground instead of in a pot. .... yeah, no. I'm getting a bigass pretty pot and putting it in the formal, right by the big fancy window, cause, ya know, it's a full sun plant but needs moderate moisture, my yard is xeroscaped, that's not gonna work.
I also have back at my mother's, as it was starting to storm and I needed to get home, a daisy and a blueberry plant. Blueberry is getting planted in my mother's back yard and we're hoping the tortoises don't eat the stalks. Daisy is getting replanted when I go back. Lavender's going back to get moved to a larger pot that I can still carry around till the pot it needs is too big for that, then I'll find it a space. Also to be replanted is the basil plant I got for my dad for his birthday.
I am loving the plants I have and have to keep controlled the urge to go out and get more to take care of. I had a pretty black thumb when I was younger, let's hope it's turned green in the time since.
